The first season is shot almost entirely in New York, and the second season takes some of the characters to Paris and the Catskills. One of the stops is the location of the original Gaslight Cafe on MacDougal Street in Greenwich Village, where Midge begins her venture into standup comedy. Their work relationship blossoms into a friendship as the two work together to overcome hurdles they encounter when navigating a male-dominated industry.
